'Han' refers to the Korean people and 'ji' means paper. Han-ji is the term used to describe Korean paper and, it’s also the art of making objects using the handmade paper.
Hanji (paper) is made from the bark of the mulberry tree 'dak' and is one of Korea's oldest and most durable products, dating back to the Three Kingdoms period around 130AD.
It's believed that Hanji crafts first began when Korean women chose natural materials such as fabric and paper to make everyday household items.
The designs on these objects became more and more elaborate until finally they were not only practicable objects but they became pieces of Art.
A video made by Arirang TV. The series highlights people from the around the globe who've been influenced by Korea over the years and I was invited to Korea to explore more about Hanji and it was made into a documentary.
