'Han' refers to the Korean people and 'ji' means paper. Han-ji is the term used to describe Korean paper and, it’s also the art of making objects using the handmade paper.
Hanji (paper) is made from the bark of the mulberry tree 'dak' and is one of Korea's oldest and most durable products, dating back to the Three Kingdoms period around 130AD.
It's believed that Hanji crafts first began when Korean women chose natural materials such as fabric and paper to make everyday household items.
The designs on these objects became more and more elaborate until finally they were not only practicable objects but they became pieces of Art.
A video made by Arirang TV. This series highlights different artisans from the around the globe who've been influenced in some way by Korean culture over the years and I was delighted to be invited to Korea to explore more about Hanji and it's multiple functions in a Korean household.
I'm proud to support the Art community in Strathalbyn and on a weekend in October '24 we held an inaugural Art Expo where people could wander through my 10 different Art studios. People came to visit my studio, see demonstrations of how to make something useful using Hanji techniques all in an effort to inspire creativity and information about this unique artform.
To get the word out about Hanji I've held regular exhibitions both in my State of South Australia and Interstate including Sydney and Melbourne. Because little is known about Hanji outside of Korea my desire is to inform, show and encourage the public to see what can be done with paper and cardboard.
At Hanji Happenings, I believe that crafting should be a fun and social activity. That's why I host regular workshops and events to bring together like-minded arts and crafters from our community.
Join us for a fun and inspiring experience!
